Dirt Screening for Clean Topsoil & Select Fill
On-site or yard-based screening to remove rocks, debris, and oversized material — producing clean topsoil and select fill for construction and landscaping.
Raw excavated soil often contains rocks, roots, construction debris, and other oversized materials that make it unsuitable for use as topsoil, fill, or bedding material without processing. Walberg, Inc. provides dirt screening services that process raw soil into clean, consistent material ready for construction and landscaping applications. We offer both on-site screening at your job site and processing at our Walberg Rock facility in Corning, giving you flexibility to choose the approach that best fits your project logistics and budget.
On-site dirt screening is ideal for projects that generate large volumes of excavated soil that can be reused on the same site after processing. Instead of hauling raw soil off site and importing clean material at significant cost, we bring our screening equipment to your location and process the soil in place. The screening plant separates oversized rocks and debris from the fine material, producing clean topsoil for landscaping, select fill for grading and backfill, and sorted rock that can often be used for drainage or erosion control. This approach can save thousands of dollars in material costs and trucking expenses on large projects.
For smaller quantities or when on-site screening is not practical, we process material at our yard in Corning. You can deliver raw soil to us for screening, or we can haul it from your site. The processed material — clean topsoil and select fill — is available for pickup or delivery back to your project or to another location. We also maintain inventories of screened material available for purchase by contractors, landscapers, and property owners who need quality topsoil or fill material without the wait of processing their own material.
Dirt screening is a natural complement to our excavation, grading, and demolition services. When we excavate a building pad, trench a utility line, or grade a site, the native soil often contains materials that need to be separated before it can be reused effectively. By integrating screening into the overall project, we help our clients maximize the value of their native soil resources while minimizing the cost of importing processed materials. With 26 years of experience in earth-moving and material processing across Tehama, Butte, Shasta, Glenn, Colusa, and surrounding areas, Walberg, Inc. understands how to handle the diverse soil types found throughout the Northern Sacramento Valley and produce consistent, quality screened products.

OUR PROCESS
How we deliver dirt screening.
Material Evaluation & Approach Selection
We evaluate the soil to be screened, determine the desired finished product specification, and recommend whether on-site or yard-based screening is more practical and cost-effective for your project volume and location.
Equipment Mobilization or Material Transport
For on-site screening, we mobilize our screening equipment to your job site and set up the processing area. For yard-based screening, we arrange for the raw soil to be delivered to our Walberg Rock in Corning.
Screening & Material Separation
Raw soil is fed through the screening plant, which separates it into the specified product sizes. Clean topsoil and select fill are stockpiled separately from oversized rock and debris. Material is processed continuously until all raw soil has been screened.
Product Stockpiling & Delivery
Finished screened products are stockpiled at your site or at our yard, ready for use. We can place screened material directly where it is needed on your project, deliver it to another location, or make it available for pickup at our Corning yard.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Topsoil is the finer-screened material suitable for landscaping, lawns, and gardens — it has a consistent texture free of rocks and debris. Select fill is screened to remove oversized material but may contain some smaller rock content, making it suitable for grading, backfill, and structural fill applications where landscaping quality is not required.
Dirt screening costs depend on the volume of material, soil characteristics (rocky soil takes longer to process), screen size, and whether processing is done on-site or at our yard. For large volumes, on-site screening can save significantly on material and trucking costs compared to disposing of raw soil and importing processed material. Contact us for a quote on your specific project.
On-site screening is generally most cost-effective for projects with 500 cubic yards or more of material to process. For smaller quantities, yard-based screening at our Corning facility is typically more economical since the screening equipment is already set up and ready to run. We will help you determine the best approach for your volume.
Wet and clay-heavy soils are more challenging to screen because the fine material tends to clump and clog the screen mesh. Ideally, soil should be allowed to dry somewhat before screening for best results. Our operators have extensive experience with the clay soils common in the Northern Sacramento Valley and can adjust the process to handle varying moisture conditions.
